What this project is

The project proposes a new operating and financing model for independent media, inspired from the experience of independent outlets like Efecto Cocuyo and expanding into an alliance of mission-aligned outlets.

Instead of relying mainly on short-term donations, grants, and platform distribution, the model creates a shared capital base and a shared digital ecosystem that can support journalism over the long term.

The problem

Independent media operating in politically or economically fragile environments faces a structural trap:

• Revenue is usually short-term and fragile.
• Funds often move through centralized banking and payment rails that can be blocked or disrupted.
• Media distribution depends heavily on third-party platforms such as Meta, X, TikTok, and YouTube.
• Newsrooms spend too much time on survival and fundraising, and too little on investigation and reporting.

This creates a high-risk situation where one lost grant, frozen account, policy change, or algorithm shift can severely damage an outlet’s ability to operate.

Why existing alternatives are not enough

Even when media organizations try to move audiences to owned channels, they face a second barrier:

• People resist taking extra steps.
• New platforms lack network effects.
• Alternative products often feel weaker than mainstream platforms.
• Trust does not automatically transfer to “another app” or a new sign-up flow.

This means the challenge is not only financial. It is also about distribution, user behavior, and digital sovereignty.
